Going back in time to the first wristwatch ever made.
Prior to 20th century, wristwatches were only worn by women as a ‘montre bracelet’, mostly purchased as a jewel or accessory and not for functionality purposes. As men’s attire allowed for storage in their vest pocket, they would don pocket watches, instead and have a chain or ribbon attached to the lid for easy retrieval.
The first wristwatch was created by Patek Philippe in 1868 for the Countess Koscowiz of Hungary. Historians find it hard to pinpoint the exact date of the genesis of male wristwatches; however, the majority agrees it was around WW1 where men needed watches for battle and aviation purposes.
In fact, Louis Cartier designed his first wristwatch for a pilot friend who needed to measure time intervals while maintaining both hands on the controls.
